    Metrorail suspends train service across Western Cape due to Eskom power cut

    Hundreds of thousands of commuters in the Western Cape will be without rail transport on Thursday afternoon following a surprise temporary suspension of the rail service. Shortly before the afternoon commute, Metrorail announced its trains across the Western Cape were temporarily suspended with immediate effect due to “Eskom disconnecting traction supply”.

    Gordhan: SAA business rescue practitioners have final say on airline’s restructure

    South African Airways business rescue practitioners have the final say on a plan to restructure the embattled airline and government will respect that authority, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has said.  Gordhan was speaking at News24′s Frontline post-Budget panel discussion on Thursday morning. SAA was placed under business rescue in December 2019. In early February its business rescue practitioners, Les Matuson and Siviwe Dongwana, cancelled dozens of routes in a bid to save cash.

    R16.4bn allocated to cover SAA’s debt and debt costs

    Finance Minister Tito Mboweni announced on Wednesday that R16.4-billion would be allocated to South African Airways over the medium term to “repay the airline’s guaranteed debt and to cover debt-service costs”. Speaking to lawmakers, Mboweni said the “SAA Sword of Damocles has now fallen on us”, referring to the decision, made in December, to place the struggling national carrier into voluntary business rescue as a result of its inability to meet financial obligations.
