Rolls-Royce marks major step forward in hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion project
UK-based industrial technology group Rolls-Royce announced late last week that the generator and associated power electronics for the aerospace world’s most powerful hybrid-electric aircraft power and propulsion system had been delivered to its recently renovated Testbed 108 in Bristol in the UK. The generator was developed at Rolls-Royce’s Trondheim facility in Norway and was subject to a thorough development test programme before being shipped to Bristol. The generator will form the heart of the 2.5 MW Power Generation System 1 (PGS1) technology demonstrator programme. The engine element of PGS1 is a Rolls-Royce North America AE2100 turboprop, and the engine selected for use in the demonstrator, plus its thermal management system and specialist controls, has already been tested at Testbed 108.

Embraer reports its commercial aircraft delivery and backlog figures for the second quarter
Brazilian aerospace group Embraer on Wednesday reported its commercial aircraft deliveries and order backlogs during the second quarter of this year (2Q21). The company’s commercial aircraft business is divided into airliners and executive (business) jets. During 2Q21, Embraer delivered 14 airliners. These included the first of four new-generation E195-E2s ordered by Switzerland’s Helvetic Airways. As part of its fleet renewal programme, Helvetic had originally ordered 12 of the smaller new-generation E190-E2 airliners. However, the carrier subsequently converted the last four of these into four E195-E2s. (The eight E190-E2s have already all been delivered to the airline.) In all, during the quarter the manufacturer delivered seven standard E175 and seven E195-E2 airliners.

Aerospace group Embraer announces major order from Canadian airline
Brazilian aerospace and defence group Embraer has announced that it has received a $5.82-billion order from Canada’s Porter Airlines for 30 E195-E2 jet airliners, with options for another 50. The announced value of the contract assumes all the options will be exercised and that the aircraft will be purchased at their list price. Embraer reported in May that it had won a major contract from an undisclosed customer for the largest version of its new-generation airliner family. This announcement revealed the identity of the customer and added the news of the options that have been taken out. Porter is the first North American carrier to order one of Embraer’s E2-family types.
