    Researcher says roads still enable social segregation

    Department of Transport (DoT) researcher Oscar Thobela says South Africa’s road network remains an enabler for social segregation, despite the end of the Apartheid more than 25 years ago. Speaking at the Southern African Transport Conference this week, he stated that transport was more transit-focused, excluding other users of the road and perpetuating the legacy of social segregation.

    UCT researchers say road maintenance backlog exceeds R400bn

    The cost of South Africa’s road maintenance backlog is nearing R417-billion, research undertaken by the University of Cape Town’s School of Economics academics Don Ross and Matthew Townshend have found. This is more than double the amount set out in the South African National Roads Agency’s Committee of Transport Officials’ (Coto’s) Condition and Budget Needs report, which is still being used as a reference today, which estimates the backlog at about R197-billion.

    Transnet signs R8.5bn rail deal with UMK

    State-owned freight utility Transnet and manganese producer United Manganese of Kalahari on Wednesday “renewed their business vows” by signing an R8.5-billion contract to move two-million to three-million tonnes a year of manganese by rail to six South African exports channels. Transnet commercial sales and marketing group executive Mike Fanucchi noted that the contract would be valid until 2023, as part of the utility’s manganese export capacity allocation two contracts.
